The Endocrine System
This is definitely not the most obvious system of the body to link to dance, but I believe it is an important one- especially for young dancers. Your endocrine system consists of glands that release hormones that control physiological functions in your body and helps to maintain homeostasis (or an overall balance). When you exercise, you raise the number of hormones circulating within the body and strengthen receptor sites on target organ cells. When you exercise regularly and vigorously, you can improve your overall organ function, physical appearance and emotional state of mind. Specific to dance and when you exercise your body, the pituitary gland, located at the base of your brain, is told by the hypothalamus to stimulate HGH (or human growth hormone) which promotes muscle, tissue and bone production. The thyroid and adrenal glands are also regulated by the pituitary gland. The thyroid gland acts as a thermostat for your body, continually adjusting and readjusting your bodies internal temperature. The thyroid glad also controls your level of alertness and ability to focus. The adrenal glad is responsible for the release of cortisol into the bloodstream. Cortisol levels control your blood pressure and glucose levels and act as an anti-inflamitory agent. Aldosterone, responsible for regulating hydration is also produced by the adrenal gland. Lastly, adrenaline is produced during exercise, which I notice it most during a performance. Adrenaline regulates the speed and the strength of the contractions of the heart, as well as helps to convert stored carbohydrates rapidly into energy.
It is for all these reasons and more that I think dancing and regular exercise is so incredibly important for people of all ages. Too much lately, we hear of heart related health problems, of juvenile diabetes, and childhood obesity. These health problems can all be avoided simply by engaging in some form of physical activity EVERY DAY.
